Mycetoma Research Centre Participates in TICAD9

The Mycetoma Research Centre (MRC) at the University of Khartoum was represented at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) by Professor Ahmed Fahal, Director of the Centre, and Ms. Lubna Sulayman Elnour, Research Assistant and Master’s student at Nagasaki University.

The Centre’s participation reaffirmed its longstanding commitment to raising global awareness of mycetoma as a neglected tropical disease and to strengthening international collaboration for its prevention, control, and management.

In a high-level panel discussion, Professor Fahal addressed the multifaceted challenges posed by mycetoma, its devastating impact on affected communities, and the pressing need for a coordinated international response.

He also delivered a lecture outlining the Centre’s journey from its establishment to its designation as a World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre on Mycetoma. In his address, he emphasised the Centre’s major achievements in research, training, patient care, and holistic management, while presenting its vision for reinforcing global efforts against this neglected disease.

These contributions underscore the Mycetoma Research Centre’s position as a global leader in advancing scientific knowledge, building capacity, and advocating for enhanced international cooperation on mycetoma. The Centre remains firmly committed to improving patient outcomes, fostering innovation, and serving as a hub of excellence in research and advocacy for this neglected tropical disease
