Sennar State Intensifies Efforts to Combat Mycetoma Amid Ongoing Challenges

Dr Ibrahim Al-Awad Ahmed Abokma, Acting Minister of Health for Sennar State, met with the Federal Mycetoma Control Programme Coordinator, Mr Mohamed Abdelkader Mamoun, to discuss revitalising efforts against mycetoma, a neglected tropical disease disproportionately affecting the region. Dr. Abokma pledged full support from the state’s health ministry, prioritising resource allocation to address the crisis exacerbated by Sudan’s ongoing conflict. He underscored Sennar’s historical role as Sudan’s pioneer in mycetoma control, reaffirming commitments to mitigate disruptions in patient care caused by the war.

Mr Mamoun outlined the programme strategy, announcing the formation of an administrative committee to oversee implementation. This body will coordinate logistics, assemble skilled teams, and secure medical supplies ahead of an upcoming campaign aligned with the Sennar State Governor’s visit to Eastern Sennar.

Dr. Abdelkader Mohamed Toum, Sennar Mycetoma Control Programme Supervisor, highlighted challenges posed by the conflict, noting severe treatment interruptions for patients. A proposed action plan has been submitted to address these gaps.

Complementing these efforts, Mr. Najm al-Din Al-Fadl, the state-level programme coordinator, confirmed advanced preparations for targeted campaigns. Health authorities now possess detailed disease distribution maps to guide efficient intervention delivery.

The collaborative initiative signals Sennar resolve to restore and expand mycetoma management amid adversity, leveraging data-driven strategies and cross-institutional partnerships.
