The Lymphatic Filariasis Workshop

The Mycetoma research center held the lymphatic filariasis workshop on 17 dec. 2022 . It included an introduction to the workshop by Professor Fahal who clarified the objectives of the workshop. The activities of the day included presentations on the WHO NTDs roadmap, the Sudan NTDs control programme and roadmap, an introduction to MMDP (Morbidity management and disability prevention), and an overview of the pathophysiology of lymphatic filariasis. The day also included talks on the clinical assessment of lymphatic filariasis, as well as the minimum package of care and the management of acute lymphatic filariasis attacks.

The second day of the Lymphatic Filariasis workshop starts with a recap session led by Professor Fahal, director of the MRC, where participants recall the main learning points from the previous day.

First presentation by Professor Fahal on scrotal swellings with a focus on hydroceles. It included the clinical examination, investigations, and management of various conditions that cause scrotal swellings.

Dr. Hiba Elzaki, community medicine physician, discussing the psychosocial impact and management, both individualised and group methods, of patients with lymphatic filariasis.

Presentation on the minimum care package and the development of health facilities for MMDP (morbidity management and disability prevention). It included requirements for surgical facilities, LF and lymphedema management, and administrative facilities.

Day 3 of the lymphatic filariasis workshop starts with a presentation on the referral process for patients with lymphatic filariasis.

Discussion and feedback followed with closing remarks by Professor Fahal. He urged the participants to work hard and apply the knowledge and skills they acquired during the workshop in their home localities.
