The Mycetoma Young Researchers Association (MYRA)
Mycetoma is a massively neglected tropical disease affecting the poorest of the poor in impoverished, remote, underprivileged communities. In endemic regions, it has many detrimental effects on patients, families, communities and the health system. There is a knowledge gap in the various aspects of mycetoma, and hence, there is a need to bridge this through high-quality, cutting-edge research.
Vision
The Mycetoma Young Researchers Association (MYRA) envisions a world where mycetoma, a neglected tropical disease, is no longer a health burden. Our goal is to advance research, raise awareness, and develop effective treatments to improve the quality of life for those affected by mycetoma for Zero Mycetoma Globally.
Mission
MYRA's mission is to foster a collaborative and supportive environment for young researchers dedicated to studying mycetoma. We aim to empower the next generation of scientists by providing them with the necessary tools, resources, and networks to conduct high-quality research, advocate for mycetoma awareness, and contribute to the global fight against this disease.
Objectives
Promote Research

MYRA Launching
MYRA was launched on the 19th of November 2022. On the launching day, multiple presentations were held, reflecting MYRA’s multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach. On the launching day the following presentations were held:
● Mycetoma Overview & Research Potential Current Knowledge and Future Direction, by Dr. Hala Suliman.
● Mycetoma Young Researchers Association (MYRA), by Dr. Alaa Taj.
● NAYLA: Changing the Narrative of Prosthetics, by Mr. Ashraf Mizo.
● Mycetoma Treatment Gaps, by Dr. Samira Mohammed.
● New Technology for Producing Bricks to Prevent the Transmission of Mycetoma in Endemic Areas, by Mr. Abubaker Mohieldeen.
Honorable guests along with MYRA members and other attendees shared their experiences and insights regarding research. Some of the honorable guests were:

On the foundation day of the Mycetoma Young Researchers Association (MYRA), we were honored by the presence of many distinguished guests:
🔸️Professor Melanie Newport, Professor in Infectious Diseases & International Health
Brighton and Sussex Medical School, UK.
🔸️Dr. Augustin Kadima from WHO Regional office for Africa.
🔸️Dr. Junerlyn Farah Agua from WHO Geneva, Switzerland.
🔸️Professor Elmansoury from the Arab Scientific Research Councils Federation.
Different topics were addressed throughout the day with presentations from:
🔹️Dr. Hala Fathi, research assistant at the MRC, talked about current knowledge on mycetoma and the knowledge gaps.
🔹️Dr.Alaa Tajeldeen, research assistant at the MRC, introduced the audience to MYRA: vision, mission and objectives.
🔹️Eng. Ashraf Mizo, founder of Nayla prosthetics, shared his experience in innovating prosthetics for people with disabilities including mycetoma patients.
🔹️Dr. Samira Mohammed, pharmacist at the MRC, enlightened the audience about the current treatment of mycetoma and identified the knowledge gaps.
🔹️Eng. Abubaker Mohieldeen, PhD candidate and civil engineer, presented his research on new technology for producing bricks in mycetoma endemic sites in order to prevent infection.
The variety of the content reflected MYRA's multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach.

On Saturday the19th of November 2022 the Mycetoma Young Reasearchers Association (MYRA) was established.
MYRA aims to be a national/international platform for young researchers interested in mycetoma research, to collaborate toward the shared goal of zero mycetoma.
