MRC Campaign to Banat Allahweiin Village

“500 patients and 48 confirmed cases of mycetoma were examined and will be operated on the treatment day in the village of Banat Allahweiin.”

Mycetoma is one of the endemic diseases in Sudan and Sennar state located at the mycetoma belt, especially in the eastern locality Wad Ounsa. Many campaigns had been organized to eliminate mycetoma in the state but interrupted. In continuation to those campaigns, the Ministry of Health and social development in Sennar state had organized a one-day campaign for mycetoma management at Banat Allahweiin village at Sinjah locality which also served patients from nearby locality states.

Minister of Health and social development in charge of Sennar State Dr. Abdel Nasser Ali Hassan praised the wonderful organization of the medical campaign and the warm reception of the people of Banat Allahweiin and the price of the former efforts in the elimination of mycetoma, stressing that he will pay special attention to this issue and will arrange to conduct 48 surgical operations for mycetoma patients which will be carried out by Professor Fahal and his medical team next March 2022.

While the executive director of the locality, Abdullah Mohammed Al-Bashir said that he is in the process to make Banat Allahweiin a model village by addressing its requirements and drilling a new well for pure drinking water.

Professor Ahmed Hassan Fahal, director of the Mycetoma Research Center, said that mycetoma is a serious disease and treatment takes a long time. He also added that the disease has many impacts on the family as a whole, calling on citizens to abide by the obligation not to deal with the manure of animals and take out the sheds outside the villages, and the need to wear shoes, stressing that the mycetoma has bacterial and fungal causative agents that cross the skin via stabbing thorns. Professor Fahal said that 48 cases in the village had been identified, and fortunately, they are in their early stages which will make the treatment easier and that all surgical operations will be conducted before Ramadan in coordination with the Ministry of Health.

The director of therapeutic medicine at the Ministry of Health and social development in Sennar State, Dr. Mzaher Ali Mustafa Abouhaj said that 500 patients were interviewed by doctors at Sinjah hospital, and 180 were identified as a suspected cases of mycetoma. 48 cases from Sinjah, eastern Sennar, and Eldally wa Almazmum areas were confirmed by Professor Fahal.

Dr. Abdul Qadir Mohammed Tom from Sinjah hospital said that a preliminary screening clinic was conducted and free medicines were distributed to patients from the State’s Medical Supply Fund, adding that ultrasound examination and X-rays were done for 180 patients in Sinjah hospital free of charge. He added that this medical campaign showed the high incidence of mycetoma in the village.
