Report On The Conference

The Fifth International Conference on Mycetoma which was organized by the Mycetoma Research Centre, University of Khartoum in collaboration with the Eumycetoma International Working Group was organized in Khartoum, Sudan in the period April 1-4, 2011.

The conference was a unique forum for clinicians, scientists, and researchers to meet and discuss key issues in mycetoma, the challenges, opportunities, threats and budding problems in mycetoma. They had explored new solutions for the various problems facing the management of mycetoma patients based on national, regional and international experience and expertise. The conference was a great opportunity for meeting colleagues and sharing experiences.

The opening ceremony was held at EL Shargah Hall, University of Khartoum on April1, 2011. It was address by the University of Khartoum Deputy Vice Chancellor, the State Minster of Health representative, the conference Chairperson and Prof. Goodfellow on behalf of the international delegates.

The scientific meetings had included 16 state-of-the art presentations delivered by internationally recognized authorities in the field and they were from Mexico, United Kingdom, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, The Netherlands, France, and Argentina. It also included panel discussions, symposia, short communications and poster presentations

The Conference Theme was Mycetoma from the Bench to the Field

The following issues were discussed during the conference:

  • Mycetoma Epidemiology, Control & Eradication
  • Novel Organisms Causing Mycetoma
  • Clinical Presentation of Mycetoma
  • New Diagnostic Tools for Mycetoma
  • Novel Therapeutic Approaches for Mycetoma
  • Patients Support & Welfare

In addition to the scientific activities, the organizing committee launched an attractive and enjoyable social programme to the delegates and their guests with visits to museums and famous areas in Khartoum, Nile cruises, trips to Bajrawi Pyramids in Northern Sudan and Gazeria. The conference participants had the opportunity to see the fascinating Sudanese folklore and heritage.

There were around 200 participants from different medical and health institutes in the Sudan, they were actively involved in the various conference discussions, activities and recommendations.

Khartoum bridges the gap between North and South of the globe; it is a safe city, situated at the beautiful confluence of the White Nile and the Blue Nile forming the River Nile.
