Recently the Mycetoma Research Centre, University of Khartoum had joined the International Collaborative Research Program for Tackling the Neglected Tropical Diseases Challenges in African Countries with a project entitled

Research on the diagnostics of early or latent eumycetoma: Search for new biomarkers, POC diagnostics, and development of a clinical epidemiology platform.

The project has four partners and these are:

The project has four working packages

This WP aims to establish an epidemiological framework as a basis for the development of this research, record accurate information and share the information with other partners, and examine the validity of the results obtained from other project WPs.

This WP will identify disease-specific metabolites present in the mycetoma patients body fluids using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and apply them for the diagnosis of mycetoma.

It will focus on the LAMP method, which can react at a certain temperature, detect by turbidity, and detect in a shorter time than the conventional PCR method, this WP will develop a rapid POC detection method for the causative pathogen; transfer the technology to Sudan.

This WP will clarify the distribution of causative fungi in the environment and their factors by detecting and quantifying the primary causative fungi using specific real-time PCR and metabarcoding analysis refining the method of analyzing environmental DNA from the soil.

This WP aims to develop humun resources and technology transfer between the five collaborating research institutions
