Khartoum, Sudan \u2014 August 17, 2026<\/strong> \u2014 In a major demonstration of national commitment to public health, scientific innovation, and social justice, Dr Amgad Fareid Eltayeb, Political and Foreign Affairs Advisor to the Chairman of Sudan\u2019s Transitional Sovereign Council, conducted an extensive visit to the Mycetoma Research Centre at the University of Khartoum and its affiliated Mycetoma Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Centre (SAA\u2019ID).<\/p>\n

The high-level visit highlighted the Sudanese government\u2019s dedication to supporting specialised medical institutions that address Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), while reinforcing the national strategy to integrate advanced healthcare research with grassroots socio-economic empowerment.<\/p>\n

Strengthening Diagnostic Infrastructure and Scientific Excellence<\/strong><\/p>\n

During his tour of the Mycetoma Research Centre, Dr Eltayeb conducted a thorough inspection of the facility\u2019s clinical, diagnostic, and research infrastructure. He visited the various departments and observed the efforts to rehabilitate the centre after the Sudan conflict.<\/p>\n

The centre\u2019s leadership briefed Dr Eltayeb on efforts to re-establish all centre activities, including the community engagement initiatives.<\/p>\n

Dr Eltayeb praised the medical and scientific staff for maintaining world-class research standards, delivering equitable patient care, and sustaining operational excellence despite complex regional and socio-economic challenges.<\/p>\n

A central focus of the visit was Dr Eltayeb\u2019s tour of the Mycetoma Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Centre (SAA\u2019ID). Recognising that mycetoma inflicts severe physical disability, social stigma, and economic marginalisation on vulnerable populations, the SAA\u2019ID center provides tailored vocational training, artisan skills development, and entrepreneurship mentorship to help post-treatment patients regain economic self-reliance.<\/p>\n

Dr. Eltayeb met directly with SAAI\u2019D trainees, workshop instructors, and administrative staff across various vocational departments, observing firsthand the production of hand-crafted goods, textiles, and artisanal items. He commended the center’s holistic care model, emphasising that physical healing must be paired with economic reintegration to truly break the cycle of poverty and disability associated with mycetoma.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the conclusion of his visit, Dr Amgad Fareid Eltayeb expressed deep appreciation for the MRC\u2019s holistic approach to healthcare delivery and reaffirmed the highest level of government support for its staff, patients, and expanding regional programmes.<\/p>\n

“The work being done at the Mycetoma Research Centre and the SAA\u2019ID Center is a testament to the resilience, intellectual rigour, and humanitarian spirit of Sudan’s scientific community. The state remains fully committed to supporting the MRC’s research activities, bolstering its diagnostic infrastructure, and ensuring that our patients receive both the medical treatment and the vocational support required to rebuild their lives with dignity.”<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
