The European Congress on Medical Microbiology and infectious diseases, the 26th Annual conference, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, 9-12 April 2016.
The conference had record-breaking attendance numbers! 11,640 participants from 123 countries attended. There were over 200 sessions, including 11 keynote lectures, over 100 symposia and oral sessions, 20 educational workshops and 20 meet-the-expert sessions as well as 26 industry-organized symposia and 157 exhibitors, and over 3,000 abstracts presented.
Professor Ahmed Fahal, the Mycetoma Research Centre Director, was invited to organise and conduct ‘Meet the Experts’ session on Neglected tropical skin and soft tissue fungal infections held on 09.04.2016.
Prof Fahal addressed the various aspects of mycetoma as a badly neglected tropical disease, a medical and socio-economic health dilemma and its severe negative impacts on patients, communities and the health authorities in endemic regions. The session was well attended and the presentation was followed by lively discussion and many suggestions were put forwards to increase advocacy on mycetoma for better care and management of patients.
During the conference the mycetoma research group had held many side meetings and had discussed the international collaboration and future plans to improve research in mycetoma.
